Pacquiao is again top newsmaker in sports
Manny Pacquiao remains to be the top newsmaker in Philippine sports for 2013. After being suspected of suffering Parkinson’s disease following his defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2013, Pacquiao came back with a vengeance in November by dominating Mexican-American Brandon Rios via a lopsided decision.
Gilas Pilipinas makes history
The Philippine Men’s National Basketball Team made history this year as they advanced to the FIBA World Cup in Spain next year after a highly emotional campaign in the 25th FIBA Asia tournament. The national team lost to powerhouse Iran in the Finals, but their mission was still accomplished as the Philippines will be represented on the world stage for the first time since 1973.
Up-and-down year for ‘The Filipino Flash’
After stringing four victories in 2012, Filipino-American boxer Nonito Donaire suffered a setback against Guillermo Rigondeaux in April. But after recovering from a shoulder injury, the Filipino Flash returned to his winning ways by beating his old foe, Vic Darchinyan, by stopping the “Raging Bull” in the ninth round.

First-ever Investment grade
The Philippines got its long-coveted investment grade rating in late March, courtesy of Fitch Ratings. Standard & Poor's and Moody's followed suit, citing improvements in the Philippines' political stability and fiscal position, as well as robust economic growth. 
Top global companies flock to PH
From luxury cars to fast fashion to ramen, it seems like global brands are finally realizing the importance of the Philippine market. Google opened its Philippine office, while luxury carmakers Rolls Royce and Bentley unveiled showrooms in Manila. The Ayala group also formally reintroduced the Volkswagen (VW) brand launch in September.

Megan Young crowned Miss World

Actress and former VJ Megan Young made history last September after winning the Philippines’ first-ever Miss World crown, besting 126 other international candidates.
Bea Rose Santiago wins Miss International
Bea Rose Santiago was crowned Miss International 2013 last December 17, adding to the string of victories of fellow beauty queens in the Philippines. With Santiago’s victory, the Philippines now boasts of five Miss International winners. 
Ariella Arida places 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe
Ariella Arida finished third runner-up in Miss Universe 2013, a feat she dedicated to her countrymen who were devastated by super typhoon “Yolanda” this year. Venezuela’s Gabriela Isler won the title, besting 85 other candidates during the Miss Universe coronation night held in Moscow, Russia.
