Teen Read Week is an adolescent reading initiative of the Young Adult Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) which is being adopted by school libraries worldwide. It began in 1998 and is being celebrated every 3rd week of October which coincides with the school's celebration of Communication Arts Month. Why do we celebrate Teen Read Week? Nowadays, teens have so many options for entertainment so it is important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it is free, fun, and can be done anywhere! Moreover, researches show that teens who read for pleasure have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workplace.

The Educational Media Center will celebrate Teen Read Week on October 14-19, 2011. The theme will be “Picture Rizal @your Library” in commemoration of Jose Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary and following the international theme of Teen Read Week which is Picture It! @your Library. As part of the celebration, we are conducting a photo contest inspired by the sayings of our national hero.
