New Subscription: Biological Sciences Review

AHS EMC deviates from tradition for 2011 Teen Read Week celebration

Last October 14-19, the Ateneo de Manila High School celebrated Teen Read Week with the theme, “Picture Rizal @your library.” For the first time, the Educational Media Center (EMC) deviated somewhat from the usual international theme to give way to the commemoration of Jose Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary. Aside from encouraging the teens to “read for the fun of it,” Teen Read Week also became an opportunity for them to know our national hero better.

Teen Read Week

Teen Read Week is an adolescent reading initiative of the Young Adult Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) which is being adopted by school libraries worldwide. It began in 1998 and is being celebrated every 3rd week of October which coincides with the school's celebration of Communication Arts Month. Why do we celebrate Teen Read Week? Nowadays, teens have so many options for entertainment so it is important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it is free, fun, and can be done anywhere! Moreover, researches show that teens who read for pleasure have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workplace.

We’ve added two local magazines to our library subscriptions. Both magazines offer useful insights on current events and national issues. 

 

Impact magazine tackles social problems, so prevalent in most Asian countries, especially in the Philippines. For 40 years, it has become an invaluable source of insights and Catholic views on current issues and events.

Picturing Rizal: 2011 Teen Read Week Photo Contest
